The Short Answer
Since 2 June 2026, DWP has been able to extend a fixed-term PIP award without a review, moving the end date later while the rate stays the same. The power is regulation 22A, added by S.I. 2026/457. An extension cannot reduce your rate, remove your award or shorten it. DWP also plans to review awards less often, generally first after three years and then every five. You must still report changes in your needs, and you can challenge an extension through mandatory reconsideration.
What this means for your payments
- Who is affected: People with a fixed-term PIP award in England and Wales that DWP extends.
- What changes to your money or your payment date: The award end date moves later. Your weekly rate stays the same.
- From when: 2 June 2026, when the power came into force.
- What you need to do: Nothing to keep the award. You must still report any change in your needs.

Why Has My PIP Award Been Extended Without a Review?
Your PIP award has been extended under a rule in force since 2 June 2026 that lets DWP lengthen a fixed-term award without an assessment. S.I. 2026/457, the Decisions and Appeals (Amendment) Regulations 2026, inserted regulation 22A into the Decisions and Appeals Regulations 2013. It reads: "The Secretary of State may extend the length of a fixed term award of personal independence payment, where the Secretary of State considers it necessary to do so to safeguard the efficient administration of personal independence payment."
DWP's explanatory memorandum gives the reason. It states that "administrative capacity has limited the SSWP's ability to review people's PIP awards promptly", which "risks awards ending before a further decision can be made". Before 2 June 2026, extending an award without a change of circumstances effectively required a new assessment.
Two 2026 regulations now shape PIP reviews, and both are listed on PIP Changes in 2026/27.
| Regulation | In force from | What it does to a PIP award |
|---|---|---|
| S.I. 2026/395 | 30 April 2026 | Work, paid or voluntary, is not a reason for a fresh determination |
| S.I. 2026/457 | 2 June 2026 | DWP may extend a fixed-term award without a review |

Does an Extension Change How Much You Get?
No. A PIP extension keeps your current rate, because the power "cannot be used to increase or decrease the rate of PIP a claimant receives". The explanatory memorandum to S.I. 2026/457 also states that the rule "cannot be used by a decision maker to remove entitlement or reduce the length of an award".
The current PIP weekly rates for 2026/27 are £76.70 or £114.60 a week for daily living, and £30.30 or £80.00 a week for mobility.

Who Is Getting Extension Letters?
PIP extension letters go to people with a fixed-term award in England and Wales, and DWP has not published how it chooses which awards to extend. In Scotland, PIP has been replaced by Adult Disability Payment, and the memorandum states that Northern Ireland plans to mirror the change.
The regulation sets no age condition, no minimum or maximum extension and no list of qualifying conditions. DWP has not published the number of letters sent or the length of each extension. Age 25 appears in DWP's award-length policy: its statistics of 15 September 2026 state that "since April 2026 most new awards to people aged 25 or over will be for 4 years with a review after 3 years".

Can You Ask for a Review If Your Needs Have Increased?
Yes. A PIP extension does not stop you reporting that you need more help, and GOV.UK states that you must contact the PIP enquiry line "straight away" if your needs change. The memorandum confirms that DWP "will then review the award in light of that change", and that extension decision letters remind claimants of this duty.
The PIP enquiry line is 0800 121 4433, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The full list of changes to report is in the guide to change of circumstances.
You can also challenge the extension decision itself. The memorandum states that "extensions made under this power will carry a right of appeal following a Mandatory Reconsideration". GOV.UK states that you usually need to ask for mandatory reconsideration within one month of the date of the decision.

Are Longer Awards Being Given to Some Conditions?
No. DWP's published policy is longer PIP awards for many claimants, not for named conditions: the first review will generally take place after three years, and later reviews after five years. The memorandum adds that decision makers and tribunals "may still make awards for shorter or longer terms, depending on the individual's circumstances".
GOV.UK still states that a first award is between 9 months and 10 years, "depending on whether your needs are likely to change". DWP has not published award-length or extension figures by condition. How award lengths are set is explained in PIP Award Lengths.

How to Check Your New End Date
Your PIP extension letter states the new end date, and the GOV.UK proof of benefits service lets you check your award online. Keep the letter with your original decision letter, because together they show when the award started and when it now ends.
You can check your award online with a GOV.UK One Login and download a proof of benefit letter. Where a letter is lost, the PIP enquiry line can confirm the award period. The memorandum states that DWP generally sets the review date 12 months before the award end date. Other changes to PIP in 2026 are tracked on PIP News and Changes.

If a Review Would Have Raised Your Award
A PIP extension keeps your award at its current rate, so a higher award now depends on reporting the increase in your needs to the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433. Where DWP accepts the change, the new decision states the rate and the date it applies from. You can then estimate the arrears between that date and the date of payment.
