The Short Answer

You can check your PIP award and download a proof of benefit letter through GOV.UK's "Get proof of your benefits and State Pension" service, using a GOV.UK One Login. The service covers PIP, adult DLA, Attendance Allowance, ESA, Income Support, JSA, Pension Credit and State Pension, but not Universal Credit. You can download the letter straight away or ask for it by post, which can take up to one week. You may need to prove your identity, normally with photo ID.

How Do You Check Your PIP Award Online?

To check your PIP award online, sign in to GOV.UK's "Get proof of your benefits and State Pension" service with a GOV.UK One Login, prove your identity if asked, and download your proof of benefit letter. GOV.UK One Login's own list of services names it "Manage your benefits and State Pension". Starting a new claim is a different process, covered in the guide to claiming PIP. The steps for an existing award are as follows:

  1. Go to "Get proof of your benefits and State Pension" on GOV.UK and select Start now.
  2. Sign in with your GOV.UK One Login, or create one when prompted.
  3. Prove your identity if the service asks you to.
  4. Download your proof of benefit letter, or ask for it to be posted.

Report a new address first if DWP does not have it. GOV.UK states that if you have moved and not told DWP, "you need to report it as a change of circumstances before using this service". The service is also available in Welsh.

GOV.UK One Login offers 3 ways to prove your identity, and the one you use depends on your device and the photo ID you hold:

  • The GOV.UK One Login app, with a phone camera and a UK photocard driving licence, a UK passport, a non-UK biometric passport, or a UK biometric residence permit or card
  • Security questions online, about financial products, your Universal Credit or your PIP, plus details from a UK passport, a UK photocard driving licence or a UK bank or building society current account
  • A Post Office, where staff scan your photo ID and take a photo of you, with the result usually emailed within a day

What Does the Online Service Show?

The GOV.UK proof of benefits service gives you proof that you get PIP, as a download or a posted letter; it does not cover Universal Credit, and GOV.UK does not list claim progress or payment dates among its features. The table sets out what the service provides and what it does not, with the source for each row.

Can You Check a PIP Claim That Is Still in Progress?

No. GOV.UK lists no online tracker for a PIP claim in progress, so the route is the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. GOV.UK describes the line as the place to "get advice or information about a claim you've already made". Relay UK users dial 18001 then 0800 121 4433.

People who started their claim through the online application can sign in to that PIP account, which GOV.UK links from its how to claim page. The guide to online claims covers who can apply that way.

The "Sign in" page at crs.dwp.gov.uk, which appears in searches for PIP login, is a DWP service for managing compensation recovery claims. It is not a PIP account.

How Do You Get a Proof of Benefit Letter Without Going Online?

Call the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433 to ask about proof of your PIP award without using the online service. GOV.UK directs appointees and people living outside the UK to the PIP helpline at the Disability Service Centre, because they cannot use the online service.

The same line can arrange alternative formats. GOV.UK states that you can "Call to ask for alternative formats, such as braille, large print or audio CD." GOV.UK does not publish a timescale for letters requested by phone.

How Can You See If Your Award Was Extended?

Your extension letter states the new end date of your PIP award, so keep it with your original decision letter. Since 2 June 2026, DWP has been able to extend fixed-term awards without a review, and extension letters have followed.

What a Proof of Benefit Letter Is Used For

A PIP proof of benefit letter shows other organisations that you get PIP, which several other forms of help require. GOV.UK's Blue Badge application asks for "proof of benefits (if you get any)", alongside proof of identity and address. The Blue Badge guide sets out which PIP awards qualify automatically.

GOV.UK lists at least 3 other forms of help linked to a PIP award:

  • A Disabled Persons Railcard, for anyone getting either part of PIP
  • A Motability Scheme vehicle, for anyone on the higher mobility rate
  • A possible discount on council tax and local bus travel, checked with your local council

Each organisation sets its own evidence rules, and some ask for the full decision letter instead. The guide to what PIP entitles you to lists each concession and the award it needs.

A proof of benefit letter and a PIP decision letter are different documents. The decision letter sets out the award and the reasons for it, and Your PIP Award Letter explains how to read its back pay section. What happens between assessment and decision is covered in After the PIP Assessment, and the 2026 extension rules in PIP award extensions.

Work Out What Your Award Is Worth

PIP pays between £30.30 and £194.60 a week in 2026/27, depending on which parts and rates you get. Enter the rates on your proof of benefit letter to work out your pip rates as weekly, 4-weekly and yearly amounts.
