The Short Answer
Fibromyalgia can qualify for PIP where it limits the assessed activities on more than half of the days over a 12-month period. The assessment guide names pain and fatigue among the symptoms bearing on whether an activity can be repeated "within a reasonable period of time and to the same standard". Points come from the descriptors the condition engages, not from the diagnosis, and both components can reach either rate.

Where this mapping comes from
Descriptor letters and point values are reproduced from Schedule 1 of the Social Security (Personal Independence Payment) Regulations 2013. The activities listed are the ones whose published assessment guidance names the functions this condition is reported to affect. No activity is listed on any other basis.
Activities are numbered as Schedule 1 numbers them, within each component: daily living 1 to 10 and mobility 1 to 2.

The remaining activities are not closed; they are simply less often engaged. Where fibromyalgia coexists with another condition, the whole assessment is in play, and a claim described under one heading alone will leave those activities blank.
Points You Could Score
Eight points in a component pays the standard rate; 12 pays the enhanced rate. The two components are scored separately and their points never combine.
Moving around is where fibromyalgia most often reaches a high score on one descriptor, because the distance bands run from 4 points above 50 metres to 12 points at 20 metres or less. On the daily living side the pattern is additive across washing, dressing, cooking and managing therapy.

Evidence and Assessment
Evidence that names an activity beats evidence that names the diagnosis. The diagnosis is rarely disputed; what the descriptors ask about is what happens when you attempt a task.
- A GP record showing the diagnosis, its duration and the treatments tried
- A rheumatology or pain clinic letter
- A repeat prescription list covering analgesia, and any pain management programme record
- A physiotherapy referral or discharge letter, with the exercise regime and its weekly hours
- A symptom and activity diary kept over four to six weeks, recording what could not be repeated
- A written statement from a person who assists with washing, dressing or cooking on bad days
The absence of a definitive test does not weaken a fibromyalgia claim, because the assessment scores function rather than pathology. What decides it is repeatability and frequency, and a dated diary answers both more directly than a further letter confirming the diagnosis.

An award runs from the date of the claim, so the months spent waiting for a decision are paid as arrears rather than lost. Where a claim is refused and later won at reconsideration or tribunal, the award still reaches back to the original claim date.
