The Short Answer
Three travel concessions commonly follow a PIP award, and each is claimed separately. The Disabled Persons Railcard costs £20 for 1 year and gives a third off for the holder and an adult companion. A disabled person's bus pass is issued by your local council. Local toll and congestion charge exemptions are set by the operator. None of them arrives automatically.
What Each One Gives
The table below sets out the position, with each figure taken from the source named beneath it.
| Concession | What it gives | Who issues it |
|---|---|---|
| Disabled Persons Railcard | 1/3 off rail travel for you and an adult companion | National Rail, £20 for 1 year or £54 for 3 years |
| Disabled person's bus pass | Concessionary bus travel | Your local council |
| Toll and congestion charge exemptions | Set by each operator | The road or scheme operator |

The Disabled Persons Railcard
£20 for 1 year or £54 for 3 years, giving a third off for you and an adult companion. The companion discount is what makes it worth more than the headline suggests, because two fares are reduced rather than one.
The eligibility criteria are set by the railcard scheme rather than by the DWP, and receiving PIP is one of the routes onto it. The card is bought rather than issued, so it takes effect from the date you apply.
The Bus Pass
Issued by your local council under the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme. GOV.UK directs applicants to "contact your local council to find out who issues disabled bus passes in your area", and states that you are eligible "if you live in England and are 'eligible disabled'".

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland run their own schemes with their own criteria and their own application routes. The nation you live in decides which applies.
Tolls and Congestion Charges
Set locally, and worth checking rather than assuming. Individual crossings and congestion charge schemes each set their own disabled exemption rules, and registration is usually required in advance.
An exemption applied for after a journey is generally not backdated, which makes registering before you need it the practical order.
What This Does Not Include
Vehicle tax relief and Motability, which follow the mobility component specifically. The enhanced mobility rate gives a 100% vehicle tax exemption and the standard rate a 50% reduction, and the Motability Scheme requires the enhanced rate with at least 12 months of the award left to run.
The enhanced mobility rate is £80.00 a week at 2026/27 rates, and the Scheme exchanges it in full.

Nothing Is Automatic
Every concession here is applied for. The DWP does not notify National Rail, your council or a toll operator, and each asks for the PIP decision letter as evidence.
Working through the list once, when the decision letter arrives, is the practical approach. Most schemes accept a copy rather than the original.
Where This Sits
Travel concessions are one part of what a mobility award opens. Motability, vehicle tax relief and the Blue Badge — which turns on 8 points or more on moving around rather than on the award rate — are on mobility benefits hub.
