The Short Answer

You track a PIP appeal online through Manage your appeal, the HMCTS service that shows your appeal's progress once HMCTS has registered it. You sign in with an HMCTS account, an email address and password, created from the link in your acknowledgement email. The service replaced Track Your Appeal. It lists your appeal reference, the current stage and any hearing date. If you cannot use it, the benefit appeals helpline for England and Wales is 0300 123 1142, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

How Do You Log In to Track a PIP Appeal?

To log in, open the HMCTS Manage your appeal service and sign in with the email address and password of the HMCTS account linked to your appeal. The account exists only after the appeal is lodged, the stage that follows mandatory reconsideration on the pip appeal route. GOV.UK says the account lets you "track the progress of your appeal", upload evidence and ask for your details to be updated. The service sits on a gov.uk address, www.manage.appeal-benefit-decision.service.gov.uk, so you can check a link is genuine.

  1. Lodge the appeal first, online or on The SSCS1 Form. The tracker cannot show an appeal HMCTS has not registered.
  2. Open the acknowledgement email and use its link to create your HMCTS account. GOV.UK states that you can also create one later by giving the benefit appeals helpline an email address.
  3. Sign in with that email address and password. An old Track Your Appeal link now asks you to sign in or register.
  4. Link the appeal if the service asks. It checks the postcode used when the appeal was registered.
  5. Open the Status tab. It shows a progress bar and a Latest update panel for the appeal.

Each appeal is listed with its Appeal reference, which HMCTS asks you to write on any evidence you post.

What Do the Appeal Statuses Mean?

Manage your appeal shows a progress bar of Appeal, DWP response, Hearing booked, Hearing and Closed, and a Latest update panel that names the current event. A paper appeal, decided without you attending, has no Hearing booked stage. The table gives each update heading in the words the service uses.

The headings come from HMCTS's published code for the service, checked on 30 September 2026. If your screen differs, your screen is right. The published appeal timescales cover how long each stage usually takes.

Can You Send Evidence Through the Tracker?

Yes, the Manage your appeal account lets you upload evidence and write a statement for the tribunal, as GOV.UK confirms. The service takes one file at a time, in formats such as PDF, Word, JPG and PNG, and sends it only after you select Submit evidence to the tribunal. Evidence can also go by post to the address in your acknowledgement letter. GOV.UK asks for it as soon as possible, so the tribunal has time to read it. What makes useful appeal evidence is set out separately.

Why Is There No Update on My PIP Appeal?

No update on a PIP appeal usually means the appeal is waiting its turn: GOV.UK states that an appeal usually takes at least 6 months to be heard. Ministry of Justice figures published on 10 September 2026 put the average at 37 weeks for cases the tribunal finished in April to June 2026. That is 3 weeks longer than a year earlier. The same release counted 129,000 open social security and child support cases at the end of June 2026, 63% more than a year before.

After the DWP response, the service warns that booking a hearing may take several months. Call the helpline if the DWP response stays overdue for weeks, your contact details change, or a letter the service mentions has not arrived. The numbers are 0300 123 1142 for England and Wales, 0300 790 6234 for Scotland and 0300 303 5170 for Welsh speakers.

What Happens After the Tribunal Decides

After the hearing, the tribunal's decision notice is posted to you, and the service says it should arrive within 7 working days of an oral hearing. HMCTS does not publish the decision online or give it over the phone. Where the appeal succeeds, the decision goes back to the DWP to put into effect, and Citizens Advice puts the normal wait for the money at 4 to 6 weeks. The arrears and the new weekly amount that follow are covered under after winning a tribunal. Where the appeal fails, GOV.UK sets a one-month limit to ask the tribunal for full written reasons, the first step towards the Upper Tribunal.

Work Out What a Win Would Be Worth

A successful PIP appeal is paid back to the date of the original claim, so every month the appeal takes is added to the arrears. Enter the claim date and the award you are appealing for, and you can estimate PIP back pay for the whole period at each year's published rates.
